Of all the towns along the I-70 corridor, Watkins Colorado is the closest to Denver. There is only 20 miles between Watkins and Denver, making it the easiest commute to the city for work. Watkins spreads across both Adams and Arapahoe counties. However, according to the 2010 Census, the Watkins zip code of 80137 is one of the smallest with only about 1,300 residents.
Watkins Colorado was originally called Box Elder and was historically an unincorporated town. There was a brief 2 year period of incorporation from 2004 to 2006 when the residents voted to unincorporate once again.
Watkins Colorado does not have its own school district. The students are bused from their homes in Watkins to nearby Bennett, Colorado.
